FAQ
What qualifications are necessary for a therapist to perform massage in Massachusetts?
Each therapist is required by the State of Massachusetts to receive at least 500 hours of training at a certified massage or bodywork school. Please read through the biographies of each therapist to learn more about their education and additional training.
What style of massage do you perform?
At Move Free, we are excited to offer the experience of three certified massage therapists and one shiatsu practitioner. Each therapist has an individual style but the work is similar from our training. If you want to know more about the specific styles, feel free to contact your therapist to explain the techniques of classic or Swedish Massage, Therapeutic Massage, Deep Tissue, Sports Massage, and Zen Shiatsu.
What happens during a typical massage appointment?
Massage sessions at Move Free are specific to the individual and each session can be unique in its structure and focus. The important thing is to be open with the experience and not allow yourself to expect a certain outcome.
Prior to your session, be sure your therapist explains the treatment plan and that you ask questions BEFORE getting on the table. While you want to keep an open dialogue with your therapist, it is also extremely important to feel the effects and go within your body to make the changes. Simply RELAX, BREATHE and allow the effects of massage to take hold.
Am I required to remove all my clothes for the session?
As a client, you have the option to leave on whatever clothes you want. If a concern exists, please err on the side of comfort - this is your time and you should feel perfectly relaxed on the table. If you have questions, please ask prior to the session. As you become more aware of the draping, you can make a more informed decision for the next session about completely undressing.
What areas may I request additional work?
A typical massage session will incorporate work on many areas of the body but specialized work may sometimes be needed to address common ailments. For example, there are ways to help digestion by working the abdominals, ways to improve walking / running by releasing the piriformis muscle in the glutes or the psoas muscle in the abdominals, and help for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder by working the jaw line and masseter muscles. Each therapist received training for these areas although they are not commonly included in a session. Please do not hesitate to ask your therapist about any work you find appropriate for your situation.
What if I have an issue with a particular area being touched?
Before any session begins, your therapist will describe the course of work to be done during the session. The goal is to tailor the session to your requests, and listen to what areas you want massaged. If your therapist feels additional work is necessary, they will explain the reason and purpose. The most common requests from people are: “Please stay away from my hair/scalp, I’m heading back to work” and “Please be easy on my feet, I’m extremely ticklish”. Please let your therapist know immediately whenever an issue may arise.
What type of feedback would be helpful during or after treatment?
Giving your therapist feedback is extremely helpful. This could concern the pressure of the massage strokes, the tenderness of a particular area, the referred pain or discomfort from a tight muscle or even the choice of music being played. Everything is helpful to the therapist in providing the best treatment possible.
